State / Roosevelt Subway Station
The State and Roosevelt red line subway station was the first utilization (of seven) of the State Street Subway design theme developed by Daniel P. Coffey & Associates, Ltd. and modifies it slightly to accommodate special aspects of this station. The primary material utilized in the station—a 6x6 ceramic block—completely reimages the station environment by focusing on color, light, patron movement and flow. All surfaces of the stations’ platforms, fare collection mezzanines and stair/escalator links were studied. Integral was creating a sense of place underground to help the transit user recognize where in the city s/he is - a skyline mural created from the 6x6 ceramic blocks indicate a sense of placement within downtown. The graphic pattern says the city center and this station is at the heart of that city. |
