Coffey Group Architecture, LLC

Coffey Group Architecture, LLC for nearly 35 years has worked towards a sustainable, energy conscious architecture. Initially this was accomplished through careful siting of projects and use of naturally available and local materials. This approach is also a part of our considerable emphasis on urban revitalization coupled with adaptive re-use, rehabilitation and preservation of existing buildings. Improved re-use of existing buildings and attachment to existing city infrastructure are the most environmentally and energy conserving way to occupy and use a building.

More recently we have advocated both the “US Green Building Council” and its “LEED” standards as well as the less proscriptive standards promulgated through the “Nantucket Principles” of the “Design Futures Council” that includes Mr. Coffey in its leadership. Additionally, the firm advocates transit linked development and currently about 80% of its projects are situated in walking distance of mass transit. This “virtual reality approach” accurately simulates the design before it is built. The idea is to have a “no surprises” outcome as well as a more “understandable, approachable and less intimidating presentation” of complex and sophisticated projects and environments.

A key innovation toward sustainability that is unique to Coffey Group Architecture, LLC. Is the recently patented COFFEYMILLE wind Turbine which is a large-scale device that can be placed on the roof of taller buildings and has been wind tunnel tested at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and is projected to produce between 35 and 50% of the electricity needs of the structure upon which it sits. It is also an excellent resiliency backup in that it can charge back up batteries and recharge them even if the grid is down. With its power being used at the site where it is generated, efficiency as a renewable device is boosted as much as 20% over remote wind farms with their grid line loss inefficiencies.
